CLOSER v.1.14

Miami-based Ivan Toth Depeņa studied art, architecture and graphic design at Brooklyn's Pratt Institute and the University of Miami and received his Masters in Architecture at Harvard's Graduate School of Design. His ambition is to obscure the boundaries between various disciplines. Much of Depeņa's work deals with reality and the nature of perception, particularly in respect to memory, and some recent projects draw on his memories of being driven around as a child to facilitate sleep.

About a recent project Depeņa says:

"In general, the project is a video installation focusing on the dissection of instances and moments that are often overlooked but are the infrastructure of our perception. Taking the stance of an observer, the video focuses on settings mostly devoid of human presence. Detachment and isolation are used as emotional vehicles to reinterpret familiar environments as relics, invoking a psychological state known as depersonalization, where the viewer becomes a spectator in their own lives. Ideally, the viewer recognizes the subject matter but redefines it as they experience the installation, establishing an uncomfortable dialogue with the viewer's memory."
